Sensitive Teeth? We Can Help!
The white outermost layer of the tooth is the enamel. It forms a strong barrier that shields the inner layers of your teeth from the effects of acids and plaque. It also protects the sensitive inner layers of your teeth from foods and drinks that are very hot or very cold. When the enamel becomes thin, it does not perform its shielding function quite as well, resulting in sensitive teeth.
If you are having problems with tooth sensitivity, it can be quite jarring. For patients having a difficult time, we recommend Seal & Protect. We can apply Seal & Protect to your teeth at a special appointment or at your next cleaning. As its name implies, we brush this professional grade solution onto each individual tooth experiencing sensitivity in order to seal the enamel and to protect the tooth from pain. It takes very little time and the soothing effects can be felt immediately.
For patients who sometimes experience sensitivity, your teeth may be asking for your help. It may be that your enamel is beginning to erode due to:
Using a tooth brush with bristles that are too hard
Presence of cavities
Presence of loose filings
Bruxism (teeth grinding)
Brushing teeth too aggressively
Gum disease
Over use of tooth whitening products purchased at the grocery or drug store
Consuming too many acidic foods and drinks (sodas, sports drinks, too much citrus)
In addition to calling us to for an appointment, please be sure to:
Switch to a toothbrush with softer bristles
Use desensitizing toothpaste
If you grind your teeth, have us make you a custom mouthguard
