Changes in the Mouth During Menopause

ree

With the wisdom of middle age comes some hormonal changes that affect a woman's body.  A shift in estrogen during menopause is the catalyst for changes such as night sweats, weight gain, and hot flashes.  However, were you aware that a change in hormone levels can lead to dental issues as well?  Knowledge is power and we're here to help you keep your mouth healthy during menopause. Considering perimenopause occurs first, this information is important for women over the age of about 40.

Saliva

A diminished saliva flow is common as people age. Dry mouth or xerostomia raises the risk of cavities because the teeth have less saliva protecting them from decay. Less saliva can increase tooth sensitivity and the occurrence of bad breath and mouth sores. Strategy: drink significantly more water.

Gums

Gums become more sensitive at this time. Additionally, redness, swelling, and increased bleeding while flossing (sometimes even brushing) can occur as gums become thinner and can become more prone to inflammation. Less estrogen affects blood flow and the immune response in gum tissues. Less estrogen also can lead to bone loss in the jaw which can sometimes lead to looser teeth or even loss of teeth. Strategies: brush with a softer toothbrush, floss regularly, maintain your regular preventative dental visits, and eat a calcium-rich diet.

Stepping up your hygiene and prioritizing proactive dental care in this phase of your life can make a world of difference. Flossing your teeth is not only healthy, but has shown to help fight against dementia, heart issues, and overall inflammation of the body.

Curious about hormone replacement therapy? We suggest you speak to your physician about this approach and make a decision with their expertise guiding you.
